Pottawatomie County is located in east central Kansas. It is named for the Potawatomi people of the area.
The seat is Westmoreland while the largest city is Manhattan. In Manhattan, Kansas State University draws many people to the county, which lies mostly in Riley County.
The county borders Marshall, Nemaha, Jackson, Shawnee, Wabaunsee and Riley Counties.
Main highways through the county include US-24, K-13, K-16 and K-99.
